Cnicus benedictus

A very pretty non-invasive annual thistle. Also known as St. Benedict’s Thistle. It has branched, bristly red stems, long spiny leaves and spine-encircled yellow flowers, blooming from July through September. Highly valued for its digestive and blood-purifying tonic qualities. Reputedly strengthens memory.
