Monstera deliciosa Mint Variegata is one of the rarest and most visually stunning variegated Monsteras available. Unlike the bright yellow tones of Aurea or the cream speckles of Thai Constellation, the Mint Variegata boasts soft mint-green, sage, and pastel-cream marbling layered over its classic deep green foliage. This cooler-toned variegation gives it a fresh, almost frosted appearance as if the plant has been dusted with icy mint paint.

The variegation pattern varies dramatically from leaf to leaf:

  • Some leaves feature block variegation, with large swathes of mint.

  • Others are heavily marbled with intricate streaks.

  • Some carry half-moon patterns with one side mint and the other deep green.

As with all Monsteras, leaves develop fenestrations (splits and perforations) as the plant matures, making it a striking focal point in any collection.

Growth Habit:

  • Climbing aroid with thick, glossy leaves supported by sturdy stems.

  • Slower growing than standard Monstera due to reduced chlorophyll in the variegated sections.

  • Best trained up a moss pole or trellis to encourage large, fenestrated leaves.

Leaf Size:

  • Juvenile: 1020 cm long, solid or lightly marbled.

  • Mature: 4090 cm long with deep fenestrations.

Rarity:

  • Exceptionally rare and expensive, especially with stable mint variegation.

  • High demand in the collectors market due to its unique colour palette and slower growth, which limits supply.

Detailed Care Guide Monstera deliciosa Mint Variegata

Light Requirements

  • Optimal: Bright, indirect light for 68 hours daily.

  • Reason: Variegated and minty sections lack full chlorophyll production, so more light is needed for healthy growth.

  • Avoid: Harsh midday sun can burn pale sections; too little light can cause variegation loss.

  • Tip: East-facing windows are ideal; for south/west exposure, use a sheer curtain. Consider a grow light in low-light months.

Watering

  • Frequency: Water when the top 57 cm of soil feels dry.

  • Method: Deep watering until water drains from the bottom, then allow soil to partially dry before the next watering.

  • Avoid: Overwatering leads to root rot; underwatering can cause leaves to droop and edges to brown.

  • Tip: Use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the roots.

Humidity

  • Ideal: 6585%.

  • Reason: High humidity keeps foliage lush and reduces browning on pale areas.

  • Increase Humidity By:

    • Running a humidifier nearby.

    • Grouping with other plants.

    • Using a pebble tray with water.

  • Warning: Dry air can lead to crisping on variegated edges.

Temperature

  • Preferred Range: 1827C.

  • Minimum Tolerance: 15C (short-term).

  • Avoid: Cold draughts, heaters, and rapid temperature changes.

Soil Requirements

  • Optimal Mix:

    • 40% peat-free potting mix or coco coir.

    • 30% orchid bark.

    • 20% perlite or pumice for drainage.

    • 10% compost or worm castings for nutrition.

  • Reason: Loose, airy mix supports healthy root growth and prevents waterlogging.

Fertilising

  • Growing Season (SpringEarly Autumn):

    • Feed every 24 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.

    • Use a fertiliser with micronutrients, particularly magnesium, to keep mint variegation vibrant.

  • Winter: Feed every 68 weeks or pause entirely if growth is dormant.

Pruning & Training

  • Prune damaged or older leaves to direct energy into new growth.

  • Train onto a moss pole to encourage mature leaf size and fenestrations.

  • Mist moss poles to keep aerial roots hydrated.

Repotting

  • Frequency: Every 23 years or when roots begin to fill the pot.

  • Tip: Avoid oversized pots to reduce the risk of root rot; step up just one size.

Propagation

  • Method:

    1. Select a healthy stem with at least one visible node and mint variegation on the leaf above it.

    2. Make a clean cut just below the node.

    3. Place in water, sphagnum moss, or perlite until roots are 510 cm long.

    4. Transfer to soil and provide high humidity to ease the transition.

  • Note: Each cuttings variegation is genetically unique and may shift in pattern.

Pests & Problems

  • Common Pests: Spider mites, thrips, mealybugs, and scale.

  • Prevention: Monthly neem oil leaf wipes and regular inspections.

  • Diseases: Root rot from overwatering, fungal spots from poor air movement.

Toxicity

  • To Humans & Pets: Toxic if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep away from children and animals.
