Alocasia triangularis is a striking, architectural tropical plant prized for its distinctive triangular or diamond-shaped leaves. The foliage is a deep, rich green with subtly wavy edges, creating a sculptural and modern appearance. Indoors, it tends to stay compact, reaching around 3050 cm in height, though with ideal care it can grow taller over time. It is a foliage plant first and foremost, with blooms being rare and usually insignificant indoors. Native to warm, humid forest environments, it brings a bold and exotic statement to any indoor plant collection.

Care Guide

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light for the best growth and leaf colour.

  • Avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch leaves.

  • A spot within a metre of a bright window is ideal.

Watering

  • Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy.

  • Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry.

  • In winter or during dormancy, reduce watering but never allow the soil to dry completely.

Soil

  • Use a well-draining but moisture-retentive mix.

  • A blend of high-quality potting compost with perlite, orchid bark, or coco coir works well.

Humidity & Temperature

  • Thrives in high humidityaim for 60% or above.

  • Use a pebble tray, room humidifier, or group with other plants to raise moisture levels.

  • Keep temperatures above 15 C and away from cold draughts or sudden temperature drops.

Fertilising

  • Feed every 24 weeks in the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.

  • Pause feeding in winter when growth slows.

Dormancy

  • May enter a resting phase in cooler months with slowed or halted growth.

  • Reduce watering and stop fertilising until new growth resumes in spring.

Maintenance

  • Remove yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain appearance and plant health.

  • Wear gloves when pruning, as the sap can be irritating to skin.

Toxicity

  • Toxic to pets and humans if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals.

  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
