Alocasia triangularis is a striking, architectural tropical plant prized for its distinctive triangular or diamond-shaped leaves. The foliage is a deep, rich green with subtly wavy edges, creating a sculptural and modern appearance. Indoors, it tends to stay compact, reaching around 3050 cm in height, though with ideal care it can grow taller over time. It is a foliage plant first and foremost, with blooms being rare and usually insignificant indoors. Native to warm, humid forest environments, it brings a bold and exotic statement to any indoor plant collection.
Care Guide
Light
-
Prefers bright, indirect light for the best growth and leaf colour.
-
Avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch leaves.
-
A spot within a metre of a bright window is ideal.
Watering
-
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy.
-
Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry.
-
In winter or during dormancy, reduce watering but never allow the soil to dry completely.
Soil
-
Use a well-draining but moisture-retentive mix.
-
A blend of high-quality potting compost with perlite, orchid bark, or coco coir works well.
Humidity & Temperature
-
Thrives in high humidityaim for 60% or above.
-
Use a pebble tray, room humidifier, or group with other plants to raise moisture levels.
-
Keep temperatures above 15 C and away from cold draughts or sudden temperature drops.
Fertilising
-
Feed every 24 weeks in the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.
-
Pause feeding in winter when growth slows.
Dormancy
-
May enter a resting phase in cooler months with slowed or halted growth.
-
Reduce watering and stop fertilising until new growth resumes in spring.
Maintenance
-
Remove yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain appearance and plant health.
-
Wear gloves when pruning, as the sap can be irritating to skin.
Toxicity
-
Toxic to pets and humans if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals.
-
Keep out of reach of children and animals.
