One of the loveliest of the hardy orchids, to 18 or 2 ft tall with purple-polka-dotted, green leaves and cerise flowers in spring to early summer. A native of stream sides and otherwise damp areas in full sun to dappled shade, preferring stable summer moisture. Accepts poor drainage. Frost hardy, actually freeze hardy, to -30F, USDA zone 4, possibly lower.
