Variegated Begonia Rouge takes the dramatic, jewel-toned foliage of the standard Rouge and elevates it with striking variegation in shades of cream, blush-pink, and soft silvery green. The deep red base leaves provide a rich background for the irregular splashes, streaks, and marbling of lighter pigment, giving each leaf a painterly, one-of-a-kind appearance.

Leaf shapes remain asymmetrical and slightly heart-shaped, with gently serrated edges. The variegation can range from bold half-moon patterns to delicate speckling, and no two leaves are ever the same. In strong light, the colours intensify the red deepens, and the cream or pink variegation becomes more vibrant.

This Begonia variety is highly sought after by collectors not only for its aesthetic but also for the challenge of maintaining stable, attractive variegation.

Growth Habit:

  • Low to medium-growing rhizomatous or cane-type habit (depending on source cultivar).

  • Can reach 3050 cm tall and wide indoors.

  • Dense foliage mound with upright leaf stems.

Leaf Size:

  • 715 cm long on average.

Rarity:

  • Rare; variegated forms are less stable and therefore produced in small quantities. Often sold by specialist Begonia growers and not widely available commercially.

Detailed Care Guide Variegated Begonia Rouge

Light Requirements

  • Optimal: Bright, indirect light.

  • Reason: Preserves variegation and enhances colour contrast; variegated leaves have less chlorophyll and need more light than fully red types.

  • Avoid: Harsh midday sun, which can scorch pale sections. Too little light can cause variegation to fade and leaves to revert to solid red.

  • Tip: East-facing windows or bright, filtered southern/western exposures are ideal; supplement with grow lights in winter.

Watering

  • Frequency: Keep soil lightly moist, watering when the top 23 cm feels dry.

  • Method: Water thoroughly and allow excess to drain.

  • Avoid: Waterlogging (causes root rot) and prolonged dryness (leads to leaf curl and drop).

  • Tip: Water at the base rather than over the leaves to prevent spotting.

Humidity

  • Ideal: 5575%.

  • Reason: Prevents crispy edges on variegated and red leaf tissue.

  • Increase Humidity By:

    • Using a humidifier.

    • Grouping plants.

    • Using a pebble tray with water.

  • Note: Avoid direct misting, as water droplets on leaves can cause fungal spots.

Temperature

  • Preferred Range: 1826C.

  • Minimum Tolerance: 15C for short periods.

  • Avoid: Draughts, sudden temperature drops, and placement near heaters or AC units.

Soil Requirements

  • Optimal Mix:

    • 40% peat-free potting mix or coco coir.

    • 30% perlite for aeration.

    • 20% fine orchid bark for drainage.

    • 10% compost for nutrients.

  • Reason: Loose, well-aerated mix prevents root rot while holding enough moisture for Begonia roots.

Fertilising

  • Growing Season (SpringEarly Autumn):

    • Feed every 23 weeks with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser.

    • Occasional application of a high-potassium feed will encourage flowering.

  • Winter: Feed once every 68 weeks or pause if dormant.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Remove faded blooms and damaged leaves to maintain health.

  • Pinch new growth tips to encourage bushier growth.

  • Clean leaves gently to maintain colour vibrancy.

Repotting

  • Frequency: Every 12 years, ideally in spring.

  • Tip: Slight root snugness encourages healthier growth avoid oversized pots.

Propagation

  • Method:

    1. Take a healthy stem or leaf cutting with visible variegation.

    2. Root in moist perlite, sphagnum moss, or a soil mix under high humidity.

    3. Once rooted, transplant into well-draining Begonia mix.

  • Note: Propagation from leaves can result in variable variegation; select cuttings from well-variegated sections to increase stability.

Pests & Problems

  • Common Pests: Mealybugs, spider mites, aphids.

  • Prevention: Regular inspections and neem oil treatments.

  • Diseases: Powdery mildew and fungal leaf spot in high humidity with poor airflow.

Toxicity

  • To Humans & Pets: Mildly toxic if ingested may cause stomach upset. Keep away from pets and children.
