The best white alder for street, bioswales and drier plantings in the west. Native of river systems from the Willamette valley and the interior desert, south to Baja. To 35 or more feet with simple rhomboid, alder-y leaves, its most outstanding features, the silvery bark and showy golden catkins beginning as soon as the leaves drop in late autumn. Fixing nitrogen is a benefit, tolerant of poorly drained soils in the winter and quite drought tolerant in summer, making it one of the few trees adapted to local bioswales. Sun to part shade, frost hardy to USDA zone 6 if not 5.
